BURNTISLAND, UK – GDF SUEZ has contracted Burntisland Fabrication (BiFab) for construction of the UK North Sea Cygnus gas field quarters and utilities platform.

Work scope includes design, procurement, pre-commissioning assistance, weighing, and load-out. Mechanical completion is expected to be achieved by 4Q 2014 and onshore commissioning by 1Q 2015. At peak the work will involve 320 personnel, including subcontractors.

BiFab previously secured the contract for design and fabrication of thejackets for all four Cygnus platforms following government sanction of the project in 2012.

Cygnus is in the southern gas basin, 150 km (93 mi) off the Lincolnshire coast, with gross 2P reserves of around 18 bcm (636 bcf). First gas is due in late 2015.

The development calls for two drilling centers, four platforms and an initial 10 development wells, with a planned export route via the subsea ETS pipeline system to the Bacton gas terminal in North Norfolk.

At plateau in 2016, Cygnus is expected to be the UK’s second largest producing gas field and will account for around 9% of GDF Suez’s global gas production.
