ABERDEEN, UK – Statoil has awarded Sparrows Group a five-year contract to supply cranes and maintenance services for the Mariner field development in the UK northern North Sea.
Sparrows will provide crane operator personnel to support drilling, operations, maintenance and logistics, and also maintenance and engineering to ensure continued availability and reliability of the Mariner A platform’s two pedestal cranes.
The contract has extension options of up to four more years.
Sparrows CEO Stewart Mitchell said: “The platform will be subject to high levels of lifting activity with both the north and south cranes working to support the drilling operations…”
The contractor is already supporting Statoil with integration of the cranes and mechanical handling equipment during construction of the platform in South Korea.
Mariner A will be equipped with an A-frame and lattice boom cranes mounted on fixed pedestals. The two crane capacities are 50 metric tons (55 tons) at a 40-m (131-ft) radius and 17 metric tons (18.7 tons) at a radius of up to 60 m (197 ft).
Contract terms include equipment modification, upgrade and replacement of components, and repair and maintenance of equipment onshore.
Mariner, 150 km (93 mi) east of the Shetland Isles, is due to come onstream in 2018, with an estimated field life of 30 years.
