SAN DONATO MILANESE, Italy – Qatargas has given Saipem a letter of award for a $1.7-billion contract for the North Field Production Sustainability Offshore Project, off northeast Qatar.

Saipem’s work scope comprises engineering, procurement, construction, and installation of various new offshore facilities for production and transportation of natural gas to mainland Qatar for liquefaction.

These will include platforms, supporting and connecting structures, subsea cables, and anti-corrosion, internally cladded pipelines.

Responsibilities extend to decommissioning of a pipeline and modifications to existing offshore facilities.

The DE HE derrick pipelay vessel, completed at the Shanghai Zhenhua shipyard in 2018, will perform pipelay and lifting operations in water depths of around 65 m (213 ft), using Saipem’s welding technology for corrosion-resistant cladded pipelines.

Qatargas aims to increase the early gas field production capacity to 110 MM metric tons/yr (121 MM tons/yr).

It has also issued a letter of intent to Saipem for work on the offshore export pipelines and related onshore activities for the same project, subject to definition of contractual details and final approval.

Saipem has been expanding its offices in Qatar and strengthened its fabrication capability via a co-operation with a local yard.
