INPEX Browse E&P and Chubu Electric Power will jointly assess the feasibility of establishing a carbon capture and storage (CCS) value chain in the Asia-Pacific region.
This will involve capture of CO2 in Japan followed by transportation from the Port of Nagoya to northern Australia for subsurface storage.
In 2022, INPEX received a greenhouse-gas (GHG) storage assessment permit in the Bonaparte Basin offshore the northwest coast of the Northern Territory, in partnership with TotalEnergies CCS Australia and Woodside Energy.
The aim is to start injection of CO2 near 2030, potentially as part of the Darwin-based carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) Hub1 proposed by the Northern Territory Government.
INPEX’s Ichthys LNG project could participate as a way of reducing its GHG emissions.
Chubu Electric Power, which targets net zero CO2 emissions from its operations by 2050, has been looking into deployment of CCUS in and around Nagoya for the decarbonization of the region.
