ABERDEEN, UK – Over the past year, the Oil & Gas Technology Centre in Aberdeen has co-invested £37 million ($51.3 million) in more than 70 R&D projects designed to sustain the UK North Sea’s future.

The programs involve offshore oil and gas operators, supply chain companies, technology developers, and specialists from other industries and academia.

Among projects under way are one with Spirit Energy to field-trial a well P&A technology that according to the Centre could deliver up to £100 million ($138.6 million) in cost savings annually.

Interwell’s thermite tool, under deployment at one of Spirit Energy’s onshore UK wells, is designed to melt materials in the wellbore, forming an impermeable barrier to seal the well.

The results will be shared with nine other North Sea companies collaborating on the project.

Another collaboration is with SPi Performance Coatings to tackle corrosion via a coating that ‘eats’ rust on surfaces and self-heals when damaged.

A field trial has been completed on Total E&P UK’s Elgin platform in the UK central North Sea, and further field trials are planned later this year.
