Akrake finds rig for Sèmè reentry project offshore Benin

Lime Petroleum Holding has signed a jackup rig contract for a drilling campaign in the Sèmè Field offshore Benin.

Lime Petroleum Holding has contracted the jackup Borr Gerd for a 120-day program offshore Benin.

This is connected to the planned redevelopment of the Sèmè Field, operated by Lime subsidiary Akrake Petroleum Benin.

In December 2023, Akrake secured a production sharing contract and a 76% operated interest in offshore Block 1 containing Sèmè, with the government of Benin holding 15% and Octogone Trading 9%.

Block 1 spans a 551-sq-km area in water depths of 20-30 m. Union Oil discovered Sèmè in 1969, with Norwegian independent Saga Petroleum developing the field in the early 1980s, producing 22 MMbbl during 1982 and 1998, at which point operations ceased due to low oil prices.

Akrake is targeting a redevelopment via a combination of a jackup MOPU and a floating storage unit (FSO), with horizontal wells and modern completion techniques for water management.

The company aims to submit a field development plan to the Ministry of Energy, Water and Mines, and restart production in the field in the second half of this year.

According to the website of Lime’s parent company Rex International Holding, the initial goal is to drill a vertical exploration and appraisal well to test multiple reservoirs. The well would be retained for use as a producer followed by drilling of a horizontal well into the previously produced H6 reservoir.
