AMSTERDAM -- Intelligent wells and Smart Field technology is the future for improving recovery from marginal and mature fields, says Roelof Platenkamp, VP of petroleum engineering and development, Shell E&P.

"With this technology, we can add up to 10% recovery for all our fields," he says. "All our future field development plans will include smart well technology; if not, I will not approve them," he says.

Roelof addressed an audience at the SPE/IADC Drilling Conference & Exhibition today in Amsterdam.

According to Roelof, this technology has been applied on the Brunei Shell Petroleum-operated West Champion field offshore Brunei.

Roelof also thinks Smart Field technology will help draw young people to the industry.
