LONDON --Serica Energy has contracted the semisubmersible Sedco 714 to drill an appraisal well next month on its Columbus discovery in the UK North Sea. The location is in block 23/16f-11, around 3 km (1.9 mi) north of last December's discovery well.

Serica is discussing development options with infrastructure owners in the area, pending a successful outcome to the forthcoming well. It has also secured a slot with the same rig next summer, either for development drilling on Columbus or for exploration in adjacent block 23/16g.

In East Irish Sea blocks 113/26b and 113/27c, north of the Morecambe gas field, the company is reprocessing 3D seismic to confirm planned exploratory well locations. It is doing similar work in three blocks in the Slyne basin off western Ireland, again with a view to testing several large gas prospects.

In the Norwegian North Sea, Serica is partnering operator BG in a planned appraisal well on the Bream field in license 407, due to be drilled in spring 2008.
