LONDON -- BG Group and Ophir Energy have started a new multi-well appraisal and satellite exploration campaign offshore Tanzania, using the drillship Deep Sea Metro 1.
The wells will be drilled around the Jodari gas discovery in block 1, starting withJodari South-1, followed by Jodari North-1 and a re-entry into Jodari-1.
The intention is to further define Jodari’s resource potential for a proposedTanzanian LNG development. These three wells will confirm reservoir parameters across the main Oligocene reservoir of the Jodari complex. In addition, fluid samples will be collected and the dynamic reservoir properties tested through a drillstem test early next year in Jodari-1.
Jodari-1, drilled in March, proved 4.5 tcf in place in the lower Tertiary intra-slope channel play. To date the joint venture has discovered 13.5–21 tcf gas-in-place across offshore blocks 1, 3, and 4.
Deep Sea Metro 1 will drill the tophole section of Jodari North-1 and then drill Jodari South-1 and a side track from Jodari South into the main Jodari field, before returning to complete Jodari North-1.
Jodari North-1 is 40 km (25 mi) northeast of the port of Mtwara and 6 km (3.7 mi) north-northwest of Jodari-1. Jodari South-1 is 35 km (21.7 mi) northeast of Mtwara and 3.5 km (2.2 mi) southwest of Jodari-1.
Nick Cooper, CEO of Ophir, said:“After these next three wells we will return to drilling high impact exploration prospects, both on the significant prospect inventory on the established intra-slope play and, potentially, also on the recently identified Basin Floor Fan play.”
