WEST PERTH, Australia – Tap Oil says operator Mubadala Petroleum has spudded the Sri Trang-1 exploration well in the G1/48 Reservation Area in the northern Gulf of Thailand.

The location is around 18 km (11 mi) north-northeast of theManora oil field development in 40 m (131 ft) of water.

The well is expected to take 10 days to reach the anticipated MD of 2,590 m (8,497 ft).

The main aim is to evaluate a target in Mid-Miocene lacustrine sands, which also provide the main reservoir atManora, with secondary targets in Late Miocene fluvial sands.

A successful test of the Miocene sands should validate the hydrocarbon prospectivity of the Northern Kra basin and de-risk dependent prospects immediately west of Sri Trang-1.

The outcome of the well, Tap adds, will determine any likely development scenario, including installation of a production platform tied back to the Manora offshore production facilities.
