HOUSTON —Dril-Quip has installed its first 18-inch by 22-inch XPAK-De expandable liner hanger in a deepwater Santos Basin presalt exploration well.
Petrobras operates the well for the Sagitario location, in partnership with Repsol Sinopec Brasil and Shell.
Dril-Quip describes its XPAK-De range as premium liner hangers that can provide technical ratings beyond those of the liner pipe and host casing. The expandable liner hanger, with hanger and packer supplied as one assembly, is set using a plug bump or a drop ball-activated multi-stage hydraulic setting tool to expand into the host casing.
The large diameters and extended durations required at the depths for the Sagitario well followed years of R&D and testing.
Through eliminating the need for contingency sub-mudline adapters, the company added, the technology can speed up well construction and reduce operating costs and risks associated with deepwater drilling operations.
