Living quarter newcomer offering turnkey design, construction service
Semcon is a new player in offshore living quarters, drawing on Sweden’s long-standing expertise in this field. Following the collapse of Emtunga Offshore last year, it has taken on 15 specialists from the bankrupt company and opened a new office where it plans to implement its living quarter projects.
Emtunga supplied the offshore industry with accommodation modules for over 30 years, and Semcon was not the only company keen to acquire this expertise.
“We feel we have a wonderful opportunity with this new venture,” says Mats Körner, president for the business area design and development. “We have some small projects on the go at the moment but we are looking for bigger ones. For the time being we’re busy supplying quotations to potential projects around the world, including the North Sea, Brazil, Caspian Sea, and Malaysia.”
Semcon offers services ranging from pre-study through detailed design to delivery of completed projects, including the supervision of both local manufacture and hook-up. There is interest not only for newbuild accommodation facilities but also for upgrading and extending existing facilities, Körner says.
“Through the new investment we can offer a complete delivery with specialist expertise in all main disciplines,” adds Håkan Kristiansen, who is responsible for the Lidköping office. “Besides this, we have extensive experience of the rigorous demands placed by the offshore industry globally.”
The company does not have its own construction facilities but in the event of taking on a turnkey contract would look to work with a construction partner, says Körner.
Prior to the recent development, Semcon already was active in the offshore sector, employing around 60 engineers in Lidköping and Gothenburg. It has two specialties: one is subsea equipment such as pumping and piping systems, and templates, manifolds and foundation structures. The second is topsides facilities for both fixed and floating platforms. These include fire-fighting systems, fuel systems, fresh water systems, black and sewage water systems, inert gas systems, ballast and bilge systems, fuel and lube oil systems, and emergency power generation.
Semcon’s core business is the provision of engineering services and product data.
