Stavanger, Norway — Gassnova CLIMIT has awarded eDrilling a NOK10 million (US$0.97 million) grant to support R&D of well control software for carbon capture and storage (CCS).
Well control technology, based on analysis and understanding of the planned reservoir and formation for the CO2 store, would help eliminate risks of subsurface leaks through controlled infill drilling.
According to eDrilling, there is no tool currently for providing well control during drilling into CO2 storage reservoirs. The company plans to develop reliable software for this purpose based on its experience with conventional well control, also pursuing integration with existing systems.
Gassnova is the Norwegian state body responsible for CCS, supporting development of associated technology and solutions.
CLIMIT is Norway’s program for R&D and demonstration of CO2 capture and storage technology, aimed at companies, research institutes, universities and colleges, often in collaboration with international companies and research institutions.
