ABERDEEN, UK  About 110 members of the UK’s Unite the Union working for Baker Hughes have started strike action in response to what the union describes as "fire and rehire tactics."

Unite claims proposed contractual changes could cut up to 29% from the member’ annual salaries.

The strike action will continue until the morning of Sept. 14 with a series of 48-hour stoppages planned until Nov. 16.

Baker Hughes is one of the largest employers in Angus, eastern Scotland, operating two sites in Montrose.

It employs about 250 workers working on manufacturing and engineering processes such as industrial 3D printing and virtual reality tools for the oil and gas industry. Montrose also houses the company’s subsea center of excellence.

According to the union, Baker Hughes told staff at the sites they had until early August to sign new contracts on lower rates of pay or face losing their jobs.
