HELSINKI, Finland – The Finnish government has authorized Baltic Connector Oy to start constructing the Balticconnector offshore pipeline that will extend between Finland and Estonia.
Authorization applies to the section in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Finland.
Baltic Connector Oy is a state-owned company formed in 2015 to implement the Finnish part of the Balticconnector system.
When completed in 2020, this will connect the gas networks of Finland and the Baltic countries and will help open up Finland’s gas market.
The EU has awarded funding to cover 75% of the project.
Meanwhile, public procurement is progressing for manufacturing and installation of the gas pipeline. Baltic Connector and Elering have screened candidates to find qualifying companies and are requesting tenders from four contractors for manufacture of the offshore pipes and from five companies for the installation, due to get under way in 2018.
Indicative tenders are due in by early September.
