GEOJE ISLAND, South Korea – The hull for Petronas’ second floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility, the PETRONAS Floating LNG2 (PFLNG2), has been launched at the Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) shipyard.
The 393-m (1,289-ft) long hull was floated out from the Green Dock 3 to anchor at the quayside. Construction began last June.
Abdullah Karim, Petronas’ Advisor of Global LNG Project – Project Delivery and Technology, said the program had incorporated experience from the first vessel,PFLNG Satu, to broaden the company’s floating LNG capabilities for deepwater operations.
Both vessels are designed to harness gas from marginal, stranded gas fields that would otherwise be uneconomic to develop.
The completedPFLNG2, weighing 134,000 metric tons (147,709 tons), will liquefy, produce, and offload processed natural gas from the Rotan field, 240 km (149 mi) offshore Sabah.
It is designed to operate in water depths of 500-1,500 m (1,640-4,921 ft), with a processing capacity of 1.5 MM metric tons/yr (1.65 MM tons/yr).
