BRØNDBY, Denmark NKT is investing in a second offshore power cable-laying vessel, the NKT Eleonora, which it aims to have operational by 2027.

Transmission lines are becoming larger and longer, the company said, with an increased focus on lower power losses. This is creating new demands for cable production and installation.

Salt Ship Design was responsible for the new vessel’s design. Construction has started in collaboration with VARD.

The vessel will have three turntables and a power cable-laying capacity of 23,000 metric tons and will accommodate a wide range of subsea tools for installation and service of offshore cables.

In parallel, NKT is expanding its site in Karlskrona with a new high-voltage offshore cable factory.

NKT Eleonora will be 176 m long with a breadth of 32 m, and its Wärtsilä 32 engines will be capable of running on methanol and HVO/marine diesel oil.

Other suppliers include ABB for the DC Grid power system and aft Azipod electrical propulsion, and NOV REMACUT for the cable-lay system and cranes.
