NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE, UK – Royston has completed work on the first phase of a diesel engine maintenance and service program for rigs owned by Stena Drilling.
The program on the Wärtsilä 16v25 No.3 generator, onboard the Class 3 semisubmersibleStena Don, involved an overhaul of cylinder heads, pistons and conrods, with a four-man team working day and night shifts on the rig at Scapa Flow, Orkney, northern Scotland.
The engine was dismantled to allow engineers to perform maintenance and repairs to the 16-cylinder heads. They also fitted new rings, bearing shells and bottom end bolts to the pistons and conrods which were subsequently recalibrated.
Other repair work included refitting main bearings and replacing thrust bearings, and replacement or refurbishment of the air cooler, oil cooler and fuel pumps and pipes with new components.
Royston then conducted incremental load increase tests in line with the engine manufacturer’s specification.
TheStena Don is due to undergo a three-month refit at Damen Shipyards’ Verolme yard in Rotterdam. It will then drill an exploration well for Total west of Shetland.
Royston will undertake further work on diesel power units onboard the semisubStena Spey and the Stena IceMAX and Stena Carron drillships.
