HOUSTON – CNOOC has awarded SOFEC an EPC contract to provide a turret system for the Lufeng permanent reinstatement project in the South China Sea.

This will be a disconnectable turret system that will be integrated into a replacement floating storage and offload unit (FSO) moored to the existingLufeng 13-2 field mooring spread.

The FSO will be a converted 245-m (804-ft) long, 110,000 dwt crude oil tanker.

SOFEC originally designed and installed a disconnectable internal turret mooring system for the field in 1993, mooring a MODEC-converted 121,361 dwt FSO.

The arrangement allowed the vessel to disconnect and sail to safe harbor if typhoons approached, later returning to the field to reconnect.

Under normal operating conditions, the turret allows the FSO to continually rotate into prevailing weather without production interruptions.

In 2012, CNOOC replaced and relocated the original system’s mooring legs and submerged buoy under a field life extension campaign.

The new vessel and turret will be designed to connect to the existing buoy and moorings and provide a fluid flow path for the riser.

SOFEC will also assist in turret integration and offshore commissioning activities in China.
