CALGARY -- Ithaca Energy has signed a letter of intent to deploy the FPSO BW Carmen on its Athena field in the UK North Sea.

Prior to signing the fully termed contract this spring, BW Offshore will perform a range of engineering studies to develop the project’s safety case and define the scope of the vessel upgrade.

The contract will carry an initial fixed charter period of three years, optionally extendable throughout the life of the field. The vessel should arrive at the offshore Athena location during mid-2011. Early production rates should average around 22,000 b/d of oil, according to Ithaca.

Chief Developments Officer John Woods says the company was also making progress with main contracts for Athena’s subsea facilities and drilling services, both of which should be assigned shortly.

Ithaca operates Athena in partnership with Dyas UK, EWE Aktiengesellschaft and Zeus Petroleum.
