ROTTERDAM – Fairstar Heavy Transport now has two transportation vessels in offshore service, following delivery of the Fjellfrom a shipyard in Malta in May.
After an initial assignment in mid-May involving a chemical tanker, the Fjell sailed from Sicily to the Lobito yard in Angola to load various FPSO components for transport to DSME in Korea for final assembly.
The other vessel, the Fjord, will also transfer components from Lobito to DSME later this year, after completing a contract to deliver a series of modules from Abu Dhabi to Nigeria.
Fairstar says that there has been a substantial increase in semisubmersible heavy transport capacity, with ten converted tankers at present in the global fleet. However, drilling rig transportation activity has declined this year, with clear evidence of “aggressive discounting” for rig transports.
The company expects this practise to continue, but plans to avoid spot market exposure where possible. It has identified numerous high-value energy projects that will likely require significant heavy transport resources in 2010-14.
