Husky agrees long-term deal for harsh environment rig

Husky Oil Operations has issued a letter of award to Seadrill (XOSL:SDRL) for a five-year contract for the newbuild semisubmersible West Mira.

HAMILTON, Bermuda – Husky Oil Operations has issued a letter of award to Seadrill (XOSL:SDRL) for a five-year contract for the newbuild semisubmersible West Mira.

This involves planned operations offshore eastern Canada and Greenland. Total estimated revenue to Seadrill for the firm five-year period is $1.18 billion, including mobilization and performance bonus.

West Mira is under construction at the Hyundai Samho Shipyard in South Korea, with delivery scheduled for 4Q 2014. Following delivery the rig will start its transit to eastern Canada, followed by start-up of operations during 2Q 2015.

The rigWest Mira is designed for drilling in harsh environments and water depths up to 10,000 ft (3,048 m). It will be equipped with DP-3 and 12-point mooring capability, with potential for two six-ram BOPs and 1,000-ton load path capacity.

Seadrill has another harsh environment newbuild of similar design, theWest Rigel, under construction at the Jurong shipyard in Singapore. It is due to be delivered in 1Q 2015 and is currently available for contract.
