RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil  The GERDAU/ECOVIX joint venture will decommission the P-32 platform, one of 10 that formerly operated on the Marlim/Voador fields in the Campos Basin offshore Brazil, after submitting the winning bid.

Operator Petrobras arranged the auction, the first under the company’s new model for the sustainable destination of vessels it no longer required, and directed exclusively at the decommissioning sector in Brazil.

The sales process was designed to ensure that the final disposal of metallic waste went ahead in accordance with best ESG practices in the industry worldwide.

Carlos Travassos, Petrobras’ director of engineering, technology and innovation, said, “Since Brazil imports this type of metallic material, we saw this as a good opportunity for the market, at the same time that we were able to promote an environmentally friendly destination for decommissioned platforms and create direct and indirect jobs within this process.

“We want everything to be carried out in compliance with strict criteria; we know that not all countries have the technical conditions to meet these criteria, but Brazilian shipyards can adjust very easily to these requirements. This means an opportunity for the domestic industry.”

After submitting payment for the winning bid, GERDAU will present its recycling plan for the platform, from taking delivery of the structure to the final disposal of waste. Petrobras will closely monitor the entire process.

The ECOVIX shipyard has an operating license for dismantling activities and a contingency and emergency plan to ensure best work safety practices.

P-32 was one of 10 production systems for the Marlim and Voador fields that are now being replaced by two new FPSOs, Anna Nery and Anita Garibaldi, for the company’s field revitalization project. The new facilities can jointly produce up to 150,000 bbl/d of oil.
