LONDON – The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) has published ‘Guidelines for Walk to Work (W2W) Operations’ (IMCA M254), under the direction of its marine division management committee.

The guidance is designed to help standardize the way that W2W vessels can provide personnel with safe access to offshore structures in the oil and gas and wind sectors.

Heave-compensated gangways fitted to vessels should stabilize the vessel’s motions, allowing for safe transfers to an offshore structure or platform.

The document includes nine sections offering standard reference guidelines on W2W motion-compensated gangway operations for the offshore energy industry, with advice on selecting the appropriate vessel and gangway, in addition to gangway maintenance and ensuring competence of key personnel.

It also covers emergency preparedness including details on the IMCA’s incident-reporting scheme.
