(Aberdeen) Subsea UK has announced a new industry-funded initiative to tackle skills shortages in Britain's subsea sector. The aim is to provide funds and support for subsea engineering companies to recruit and train 100 mature engineers from other industries by the end of this year; recruit an additional 100 graduates in 2006-07; and inspire 10,000 school pupils to consider a career in the subsea business.

Among the industry supporters are pipeline specialists JP Kenny, Acergy and Technip, with further pledges from BP and Scottish Enterprise. Subsea UK's chief executive David Pridden commented: "By working together across the industry, we can showcase the breadth of opportunities within the subsea sector and recruit and train much more efficiently."
