NORWICH, UK— Umid Babek Operating Co. (UBOC) has contracted Aquaterra Energy to supply an HP/HT subsea riser system for the HP exploration well on the Babek Field offshore Azerbaijan.

Aquaterra will provide the 15,000-psi system, using its AQC-SR connector range, operated via a jackup MODU, in a water depth of 62 m.

The company’s engineers advised using a jackup instead of a semisubmersible for improved safety and efficiency, and to reduce cost and rig time.

Semisubmersibles are prone to greater downtime, Aquaterra said, and may need a 20% additional time period to complete the same operation compared with a jackup in shallower water depths.

The riser system’s AQC-SR quick connectors will provide UBOC with gas-tight metal-to-metal seals and a backup elastomeric seal.

In addition, the ability to pressure test each connection upon makeup provides enhanced environmental reassurance against wellbore fluid discharge, Aquaterra said, and assurance of connector integrity prior to running.
