ÅLESUND, Norway  Volstad Maritime has contracted Norwegian Electric Systems AS (NES) to supply a battery package and associated control system for the M/S Volantis subsea construction vessel.

NES will provide the equipment in connection with a program to upgrade the vessel to battery power notation before it starts a new charter contract early next year.

The company has performed similar battery upgrades for various platform supply vessels.

Volantis is a 107-m-long DP vessel with a 15-metric-ton active heave-compensated subsea crane, which in recent years has operated in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.

NES will engage its three facilities in Bergen, Egersund and Ålesund to design, assemble and test the battery package and control system.
