HARTLEPOOL, UK – JDR Cable Systems plans to open a new subsea cable manufacturing plant in Cambois, near Blyth, northeast England.
Subject to final agreements, construction should start next year with the facility due to open in 2024.
The initial anticipated investment of £130 million ($177 million) will be part funded by a grant from the BEIS Offshore Wind Manufacturing Investment Support scheme, with the remainder likely supplied by financial institutions and UK Export Finance.
JDR sees this as the first stage of a program to expand its product portfolio for renewable energy, adding HV export and long length array cables to its existing capabilities.
The 69,000-sq m (742,710-sq ft) facility, on the site of a former coal-fired power station, will include a catenary continuous vulcanization line, allowing it to handle the full process of manufacturing HV subsea cables for offshore wind farms.
