BUSAN, South Korea– ABS has granted approval in principle (AIP) to Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for its standardized topsides design for an FPSO facility and deepwater FLNG hull design.

Initially intended for operations in West Africa, HHI advises its standardized topsides design is adaptive to a range of conditions, potentially offering reduced costs and shorter project timelines.

Seon Mook Lim, senior vice president, Offshore Division at HHI, said: “In the current market, HHI’s standardized topside design, requested by our operators, potentially provides more affordable capex with shorter project schedules—and more secure systems reliability and safety with ABS certificates, based on the stringent evaluation process.

“Further, this newly developed product provides great value, helping to protect profitability form engineering, procurement, and construction project risks, and enabling modification to various upstream conditions of West African oil and gas fields with minimal design changes.”

HHI’s FPSO Topside Facilities Design as approved stands in accordance with the ABS 2017 Guidance Notes on Review and Approval of Novel Concepts and considers that the conceptual engineering as proposed complies with the intent of the applicable rules and standards.

HHI advises the Newbuilding Conversion FLNG hull design for offshore application can be constructed for about 80% less than the cost of a conventional FLNG hull. It is based on LNG carrier designs combined with the requirements for FLNG production, such as structural reinforcements to take topsides module load and a hull designed to allow up to 25 years operation without drydocking.

The design features a barge-shaped hull, a GTT Mark III containment system with storage for about 192,000 cu m, and provisions to accommodate an internal turret and 45,000-ton of topsides modules to deliver 2.5 mtpa of LNG.

Hyungkwan Kim, executive vice president, Shipbuilding Division at HHI, said: “In the current emerging gas market, a ready-to-convert offshore FLNG hull, with ABS certification, at affordable capex is an important product for monetization of gas reserves around the globe. This new line-up from HHI responds to the requirements of operators and combines HHI’s unparalleled expertise in shipbuilding with ABS’ stringent safety evaluation.”
