Scorpio issues LOI for wind turbine installation vessel

Scorpio Bulkers Inc. has signed a letter of intent with Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Inc. to build a wind turbine installation vessel.

MONACO – Scorpio Bulkers Inc. has signed a letter of intent with Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Inc. to build a wind turbine installation vessel.

The contract is expected to be signed in early 4Q 2020 and will include options to construct up to an additional three units.

The initial self-propelled jackup vessel is scheduled to be delivered in 2023. The vessel is an NG-16000X design from GustoMSC, an NOV company, and will include a 1,500-metric ton leg encircling crane from Huisman Equipment B.V.

The total project cost is expected to be about $265-$290 million, subject to final design modifications.

The vessel is expected to have the capacity to install the largest wind turbines currently designed, at a height of more than 185 m (607 ft) above sea level and in water depth in excess of 65 m (213 ft).

The hull is expected to be 148 m (486 ft) in length, 56 m (184 ft) in width, and 12 m (39 ft) in depth. The vessel will accommodate 130 people.
