BILBAO, Spain  Japan’s Kansai Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) has signed an agreement with Saitec Offshore Technologies to become a partner and investor in the DemoSATH floating offshore wind project.

KEPCO joins RWE Offshore Wind, which entered the project in 2020.

Floating wind energy offers opportunities in deepwater regions not suited to fixed-bottom offshore wind farms. Saitec's SATH (Swinging Around Twin Hull) technology is based on a twin hull made from modularly pre-fabricated and subsequently braced concrete elements.

The floater can weathervane and self-align to the wind due to its single-point mooring arrangement.

A 2-MW version will be deployed this summer in a test (BIMEP) 2 miles from the Basque coast in northeast Spain in a water depth of 85 m.
