SANDNES, Norway — Horisont Energi and green hydrogen specialist Lhyfe have a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cooperate on green ammonia-producing plants in Europe supplied by green hydrogen.
In Finnmark, northern Norway, Horisont Energi has an agreement with Equinor and Vår Energi to jointly develop Barents Blue, Europe's first large-scale production facility for blue ammonia.
With demand for ammonia rising in Europe, the company also has signed an MoU with the port of Rotterdam to set up a corridor for transport of blue ammonia from Norway to Rotterdam.
The blue ammonia would be produced in northern Norway from offshore natural gas, with associated carbon capture and storage.
Lhyfe connects its production sites directly to local renewable energy sources to fuel local industry, with 93 projects in development in Europe (more than 4.8 GW of total installed capacity), and a first offshore plant demonstrator to be inaugurated this September.
Under the new agreement, a first project comprising renewable hydrogen and green ammonia production plants could be located in northern Europe. The two companies also will identify new and existing project opportunities for industrial scale green ammonia plants.
