SCHIEDAM, the Netherlands – BMS Heavy Cranes has ordered a 3,000-metric ton (3,307-ton) ringer crane from Huisman for offshore wind turbine installations.
The system is designed to lift components weighing 1,200 metric tons (1,323 tons) at heights of up to 225 m (738 ft), and heavier structures of 3,000 metric tons at lesser heights.
BMS will use the crane for placing the next generation of larger wind turbines on offshore floating foundations. The electrically-driven arrangement helps cut emissions and improves operational accuracy and energy efficiency, Huisman claimed.
The contract includes an option for second ringer crane.
Huisman’s modular ring system allows for use of either a full 360° ring or a portion of it, depending on site layouts. It is also said to be operable in higher winds than other more established designs.
