LONDON – bp has reaffirmed its commitment to a new green hydrogen production facility in the northeast England that could supply up to 500 Mwe of hydrogen production by 2030.
HyGreen Teesside would be developed in phases, but should start operating in 2025, with an initial 60 MWe of installed hydrogen production capacity. A final investment decision is due in 2023.
bp’s blue and green hydrogen projects in Teesside, and the proposed Net Zero Teesside power project, will also support local skills development and the emergence of a skilled UK-based hydrogen supply chain, the company said.
The combined 1.5 GW capacity of HyGreen Teesside and H2Teesside could deliver 30% of the UK government’s target of 5 GW of hydrogen production by 2030, the company added, noting that industries in Teesside account for over 5% of the UK’s industrial emissions.
bp has already announced a series of memoranda of understanding with potential industrial customers for hydrogen in the Teesside area, including existing and planned operations.
