HOUSTON – Maritime Developments Ltd (MDL) has completed two flex-lay projects for Oceaneering International in the Gulf of Mexico for Oceaneering International.
In both cases, the scope included recovery and installation of flexible jumpers using an MDL TTS-4/375 series tensioner on board the Harvey Blue Sea vessel.
The first 15-in. jumper was wet-parked subsea: in this case, the tensioner was used to firstly recover the flexible onto the empty installation reel (mobilized via an MDL-manufactured reel drive system) for inspection and preparation for installation in-field.
The jumper was then deployed in a reverse manner, using the reel drive system, tensioner and overboarding chute.
Following the installation, the vessel returned to port to fit the reel with a 16.5-in. jumper for the second project on a separate field, installed using the same spread.
The tensioner, with a 5.5-m (18-m) track contact length, is the largest unit in MDL’s portable fleet. For both projects it was deployed alongside an 800-metric ton (882-ton) electric reel drive system, designed for Oceaneering and delivered in 2017.
The latter can handle reels up to 14 m (46 ft) diameter and skid fully-loaded reels weighing up to 500 metric tons (551 tons). For this campaign, the spread allowed deepwater installation of the product without the need for a specialist lay vessel, MDL said.
