LONDON – Drilling operations on the HP/HT North Eigg exploration well in the UK northern North Sea are taking longer than expected.

The Transocean semisubmersible Paul B. Loyd Jr. spud the well in July, targeting gas in Upper Jurassic condensate sands.

Operator Serica Energy said that while operations had been progressing despite certain delays in drilling the top-hole section, a critical item of rig equipment suffered a failure during preparations for drilling the well’s third section.

A replacement has been tracked down and will be transported to the rig, but these issues may set back the original drilling schedule by around six weeks.

Serica does not expects any impact on the ultimate geological outcome of the well and anticipates that all well costs will benefit from the Investment Allowances introduced under the UK’s new Energy Profits Levy.

Results from the well should now be issued in December.
