ATHENS, GreeceEnergean has submitted a bid to the Greek government for a concession to operate a gas storage facility in the depleting South Kavala field offshore northern Greece.

South Kavala, discovered in 1972, was developed via a single-well jacket tied back to the offshore Prinos field facilities through a 12-in. pipeline. The field’s 1 bcm of sweet, lean gas was used as fuel both at the Prinos field center and at the associated onshore process plant.

During the 1990s wellhead compression was added to the jacket to maintain production, and the field currently has two producer wells. Energean took over as operator in 2007.

Assuming regulatory approval comes through for the storage scheme, this would provide an additional revenue stream that would be largely independent of global commodity price fluctuations, the company said, also opening potential for carbon capture and storage opportunities in the wider area.

In addition, Energean has switched to 100% renewable energy in powering its Prinos assets, the company said, leading to an approximate 45% reduction in the Scope 1 & 2 carbon emissions.

Elsewhere in the eastern Mediterranean, the company (via its Edison E&P subsidiary) continues to work with Eni on planning for the Argo Cassiopea gas field development offshore Sicily. They now anticipate first gas in 2024.

Offshore Croatia, the Irena-2 appraisal well encountered 8-11 m (26-36 ft) of net gas pay, in line with pre-drill expectations, and the well has been suspended for future production.

As for Energean’s flagship Karish gas/condensate project offshore Israel, the 14 mooring lines are now in place to the anchors that will connect the FPSO Energean Power (due to sail from Singapore next summer) to the seabed.

Installation of the risers that will link the production wells to the FPSO should start shortly and finish in 1Q 2021.

At the Sembcorp Marine shipyard, most of the main modules and pipe racks have now been lifted onto the FPSO hull, aside from module 1 and the flare.

Onshore, installation began in August of the production rate measurement system at Dor, with mechanical completion and commissioning due to follow early next year.

Around the same time, construction should finish of the onshore section of the export pipeline from Karish, with the system expected to be ready for first gas by end-April 2021. All onshore components should be completed over six months ahead of first gas entries into the system.

In the UK central North Sea, Edison E&P will participate in the imminent two-well appraisal campaign on the Glengorm gas/condensate discovery.
