HONG KONG — CNOOC has made a large oilfield discovery in the Bohai Sea offshore eastern China, thought to hold 104 MMtoe in place.

The Qinhuangdao 27-3 field is in the north-central part of the sea, in average water depths of about 25 m. The main oil-bearing play is the Minghuazhen Neogene Formation; the oil is a medium-heavy crude.

Xu Changgui, CNOOC’s deputy chief exploration officer, said the discovery “further demonstrates the oil and gas exploration potential in the complicated strike-slip fault zones of the Bohai Sea."
