NEW DELHI, India — ONGC has discovered oil, gas and condensate with a well in the Mumbai offshore region off western India, the company revealed in its latest results statement.
Exploratory well SD-4-4 was drilled in C-Series Nomination ML Block, testing two targets in the Daman Formation. Results confirmed the presence of oil in particular along the rising flank of the Eastern margin fault.
The prospectivity of similar fault blocks could open a corridor for exploiting oil accumulations in the Tapti Daman area, the company added.
During a recent board meeting, the company announced plans to step up investment in exploration. This includes activities funded through ONGC’s internal program and others funded and facilitated by the Indian government.
One government-funded program covers appraisal of offshore areas up to the Exclusive Economic Zone, acquiring 70,000 line km of 2D broadband seismic data, along with processing and interpretation, off India’s west and east coasts and in the Andaman offshore region.
In the Andaman Basin, ONGC has two exploration blocks under India’s Open Acreage Licensing policy. It plans to drill six wells in the next three years (two under an ONGC-committed work program and four through government funding).
