LUDWIGSHAVEN, Germany – BASF has entered an agreement with China BlueChemical Ltd. Co., and chemical engineering specialist Wuhuan Engineering concerning gas resources offshore China.
At the Dongfang Industrial Park in Hainan Province, BlueChemical extracts large volumes of gas from fields in the South China Sea with high concentrations of CO2, which needs to be removed for large-scale downstream applications.
According to BASF, the process of separating CO2 from gas leads to yield loss and direct carbon emissions and this limits development and use of gas with high CO2 content.
The company will apply its experience in catalyst development, reactor design and related process technology to collaborate with the other two companies to address these issues. They aim to improve process energy and carbon efficiency beyond existing commercial catalyst and technological capabilities to promote lower-carbon development of the gas and a more economic and environmentally acceptable commercial process.
