Evacuations begin as hurricane enters the Gulf of Mexico

NEW ORLEANS – The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement has activated its Hurricane Response Team as Hurricane Michael enters the Gulf of Mexico.

Based on data from offshore operator reports submitted as of 11:30 a.m. CDT today, personnel have been evacuated from 10 production platforms, 1.46% of the 687 manned platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

Five dynamically positioned rigs have moved off location out of the storm’s path as a precaution. This number represents 29.4% of the 17 rigs of this type currently operating in the Gulf.

From operator reports, it is estimated that about 19.07% of the current oil production and 11.09% of the natural gas production in the Gulf of Mexico have been shut-in.
