Brunei's Enggang Field under appraisal
In Offshore Agreement 7, Shell Brunei has suspended Enggang-3 as an oil and gas well. The well was the second appraisal of Shell's January 1993 Enggang-1 oil and gas discovery, which flowed 2,250 b/d oil and 10.4 MMcf/d gas. The Enggang Field is located in only 12 meters of water near the producing Seria Field in the Baram Delta Basin.
Fletcher Challenge Petroleum is seeking a semisubmersible to drill two deep wells in around 100 meters of water. Drilling will begin in Block A in the fourth quarter of this year. Proposed total depths for the program are around 5,500 meters. Block A was previously held under license by Elf Brunei, which withdrew from the Petroleum Mining Agreement in October 1994. The block contains several oil discoveries including the Perdana Field.
Recent Vietnamese wells mixed, but encouraging
MJC has plugged and abandoned 05-TL-1X in Block K05-1(B) in the South Con Son Basin offshore Vietnam. The well was sidetracked on two occasions before reaching a total depth of 4,500 meters. Due to mechanical problems, the 8 1/2-inch section was not logged. The primary Miocene carbonate objective was dry but a small oil column was encountered in a Pliocene sand, and oil shows were reported in clastics underlying the carbonate. Although MJC's results are not conclusive, it seems that the potential of the giant Blue Dragon structure has been severely down-graded following this well. MJC plans another well on the feature later in 1995.
MJC, a Mobil-led consortium, paid a signature bonus of US$25 million when it signed for the PSC in April 1994. A similar amount would be payable if a discovery is made.
Meanwhile, Total has completed 11-1-CC-1X in Block 11-1 in the same basin as an oil, gas, and condensate discovery. The well flowed around 2,000 b/d of liquids and 15 MMcf/d gas from Miocene sandstone units. While the gas flow rate from one zone was quite encouraging, the oil flow rates achieved were quite disappointing.
In Block 05-2, BP has completed 05-2-KCT-1X as an oil and gas discovery. the wildcat flowed 5,075 b/d oil and 15.4 MMcf/d gas from thin Miocene sandstone units. BP then moved the Actina rig to the site of its next well in the block, 05-2-KCT-1X.
In Block 11-1, Pedco, the Korean state oil company, is reported as testing 11-2-RVD-1X and 11-2-RD-1X. Results are awaited with interest.
Myanmar awards Texaco 13,800 sq km Block M-10
On 8 March, Texaco was awarded Block M-10 in the Gulf of Martaban by the Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise. The block is around 13,800 sq km in size and lies directly north of Texaco's Yetagun Field. Texaco's partners are Premier and Nippon, the same as in blocks M-12, M-13, and M-14. Texaco has recently begun a three-well exploration program in the area. However, its first well, Dawei-1 in M-14, was dry. The Deepsea Ice drillship has now relocated and spudded Myeik-1 in M-12. this well is located close to Esso's M-12-A-1, drilled in 1975, which had good gas shows.
Pedco's appraisal of its Gorae Field
proves disappointing
Pedco's two-well appraisal program in the Gorae I discovery has proven to be disappointing. In August 1994, the Korean state oil company began a two-well program to access the commerciality of its September 1993 Gorae I gas discovery made in Block VI-1 in the Ulleung Basin. The first delineation well was abandoned after DSTs were conducted in early December, and the second well abandoned in mid-February. No significant gas was encountered in the Miocene sandstone targets and the Falcon semisubmersible was released.
Deepwater Block SB-G off Sabah oes to Shell
On 27 January, Sabah Shell was granted deepwater Block SB-G. It is the fifth deepwater license awarded in Malaysia and the first off Sabah. SB-G covers an area of 4,250 sq km and lies in water depths ranging between 1,000 and 1,800 meters. The PSC has been awarded for an initial seven-year exploration phase, during which seismic is required in the first four-year period. Drilling is not required until the next three-year period under the terms of the PSC.
The new block lies close to Shell's other holdings in the area and adjacent to its recent Kebabangan-1 oil, gas, and condensate discovery made in April 1994.
IPC becomes operator of PPLs
offshore Papua New Guinea
Following the withdrawal of Mobil, the International Petrol-eum Company of Dubai has assumed operatorship of PPLs 82 and 152 in the Gulf of Papua. PPL82 contains the Pandora reefal trend which has proven to be gas-bearing in the Pandora-1 and Pandora B-1 wildcats. Several other undrilled reefs are known to exist in both licenses but Mobil felt reserves were insufficient to develop an LNG project.
PGS shooting seismic off the Philippines
In early January, PGS began its group shoot in the Philippines using the Odin vessel. Data are being acquired for several companies, including Alcorn, Basic, Kirkland, PNOC, Philodrill, Pecten, Shell, and Trans-Asia. It is expected to take around eight weeks to complete.
