Petronas details latest E&P programs in results statement

KUALA LUMPUR, MalaysiaPetronas’ average production in 2023 fell slightly to 2.43 MMboe/d, due mainly to lower crude oil output from Malaysia.

However, the company brought onstream 21 new projects in Malaysia and participated in seven other startups elsewhere. It also took FID on 16 new domestic projects and a further five outside Malaysia.

Petronas made 24 oil and gas discoveries over the same period, including 20 in Malaysia, and started a new offshore multiclient 2D seismic survey in the northern part of the Straits of Melaka to map the hydrocarbon potential in the open blocks of PM320 and PM321 offshore Peninsular Malaysia.

Other highlights included:

  • Signing a life asset production sharing contract (PSC) with Ping Petroleum for the Abu Cluster offshore Peninsular Malaysia;
  • A memorandum of cooperation (MoC) with Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam) to explore collaboration opportunities in Vietnam’s upstream, renewable energy, gas; and downstream sectors;
  • Signing PSCs for Suriname’s offshore blocks 63 and 64 with Staatsolie;
  • A memorandum of understanding and two technical assistance agreements with PTT Exploration and Production (PTTEP) for the development of PTTEP-operated blocks SK405B and SK410B located offshore Sarawak; and
  • An MoC with Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and JOGMEC to strengthen collaboration on cross-border CO2 transportation for CCS projects. 

In addition, Petronas’ floating LNG facilities, PFLNG Satu and PFLNG Dua, delivered 38 LNG cargoes to international customers last year. And the company’s subsidiary MISC Berhad entered into a binding heads of agreement with Pengerang LNG (Two) to supply and maintain an LNG FSU for the Petronas LNG Regasification Terminal in Johor.

Finally, the company acquired a 49% stake from Northland Power in the Hai Long offshore wind project in Taiwan.
