KNESEBECK, Germany – Subsea 7 has completed reel-laying of GluBi pipes for the Aker BP-operated Hod oil field development in the Norwegian North Sea.

This was Butting’s first order for its mechanically clad GluBi pipes, said to feature an additional special adhesive between the carbon-manganese steel and the corrosion-resistant liner.

Subsea 7 placed the order in June 2020 for GluBi pipes for the Hod B project, a tieback to the Valhall complex. By the start of 2021, Butting had produced more than 12 km (7.5 mi) of pipes in 12-m (39-ft) lengths and 32 pieces in 3-m (9.8-ft) lengths.

The order also included GluBi pipes in 2- and 0.7-m (6.5/2.3- ft) lengths for test purposes, and 80 pup pieces on which Subsea 7 performed welding certifications.

The mechanically clad pipes can be installed offshore using the reel-lay method without using inner pressure or increasing the wall thickness of the corrosion-resistant liner. This is said to reduce laying and material costs.

GluBi pipes can be produced in ODs ranging from 6-18-in. The product is certified in accordance with DNVGL-RP-A203.
