IJMUIDEN, the NetherlandsStrohm has developed a thermoplastic composite pipe (TCP) with an integrated weight coating.

The company has supplied the first fully bonded TCP flowline featuring the coating – measuring 2,200 m (7,218 ft) in length and with a diameter of 2.5-in. – to Trident to support the Elon-C subsea tieback to the Okume platform complex offshore Equatorial Guinea.

Simon Lorelli, subsea operations manager for Trident, said: “The integrated weight coating, in addition to other means, helped us ensuring an on-bottom stability of this TCP in such shallow water.

“In addition, the…product offers the flexibility of terminating the flowline offshore, which considerably de-risked the offshore execution.”

Strohm has also analyzed the CO2 footprint related to manufacture and installation of a TCP flowline, claiming a 50%-plus reduction compared to alternative steel products.

The company is continuing this work to assess the impact of the non-corrosive nature of TCP, which it says dispenses with the requirement for injection of chemicals related to inspection and pigging.
