HAMILTON, Bermuda -- Dominion Petroleum’s Alpha prospect in Tanzania’s deep offshore block 7 is a potential oil or gas giant, according to a new competent persons report (CPR) prepared by Energy Resource Consultants (ERC).

The undrilled Alpha prospect was identified from existing 2D seismic data supported by amplitude variations with offset (AVO) studies conducted earlier this year.

The CPR report estimates the structure’s mean prospective resource atf 1.104 Bbbl of oil or 7.069 tcf of gas., with exploratory drilling given a 12% chance of success. Alpha is in water depths of around 4,000 ft (1,219 m), with multiple drilling objectives right down to 16,000 ft (4,877 m) subsurface.

Dominion says the aim of this study was to assist in planning a 3D seismic survey of around 1,000 sq km (386 sq mi). This program should start in July and take roughly 60 days to complete. Thereafter, Dominion plans to start evaluation of other prospects and leads already identified in the 2D seismic.
