OSLO -- Gassco has awarded Marine Mätteknikk AB a contract covering a total of 636 km (395 mi) of seabed surveys for potential CO2 pipelines.

This work will begin in early September for 19 days of continuous offshore survey work.

Gassco, under mandate from Ministry of Petroleum and Energy and in cooperation with Gassnova SF and Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD), are currently evaluating technical solutions for the transportation of captured CO2 from flue gas emitted by Naturkraft's 420 MW gas fired Power Plant at Kårstø and the new thermal power plant under development at Mongstad.

Suitable locations on the Norwegian continental shelf will be evaluated for the sequestration of the captured CO2, the company says.

The survey work to be performed by Marine Mätteknikk AB will provide essential data for the transport routes to be further developed during the pre-engineering phase, due to begin in 1Q 2009.
