OSLO, Norway – PGS, in partnership with TGS and SLB, has secured pre-funding to acquire 5,300 sq km of seismic over the Sarawak basin offshore Malaysia.
The survey will be the third phase of a multi-year contract awarded by Petronas three years ago to acquire and process up to 105,000 sq km of multiclient 3D data across the basin over a five-year period.
Under the first phase, data were acquired over 8,400 sq km and acquisition recently finished of the 6,800-sq-km second phase.
Ramform Sovereign will mobilize imminently for Phase 3 and should conclude this portion of the survey in November.
PGS President and CEO Rune Olav Pedersen said the partners aim to deliver results that will improve regional understanding of the petroleum systems in a basin that has multiple producing fields.
“Sarawak basins are one of Southeast Asia’s most exciting exploration hotspots, with numerous oil and gas discoveries announced in recent months,” added TGS CEO Kristian Johansen.
Petronas, via Malaysia Petroleum Management, is enhancing its datasets to develop new plays to be explored, notably through imaging the pre-Middle Miocene Unconformity play in the deepwater area of the Sarawak basin, supporting companies assessing opportunities for exploration in the Malaysia Bid Round.
