LONDON – Britain’s Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) will make available historic offshore seismic data following a consultation process.
This led to the conclusion that seismic acquired under an exploration license and which is more than 10 or 15 years old can be made available on application to the OGA, published via the UK’s National Data Repository (NDR).
To support the development, the authority will issue guidance on conditions under which geophysical survey data created or acquired pre-2018 may be published.
Scott Robertson, director of Operations, said: “These additional data will be extremely valuable to explorers and developers in meeting MER UK goals, and in supporting a net zero future by identifying potential carbon and hydrogen storage sites that are vital for the UK to meet its emissions abatement targets for 2050 and beyond.
“We expect to see a significant increase in the re-working and reprocessing of the legacy data which will be published and the opportunities identified by such analysis will lead to activity that should bring real benefits to industry, the wider UK economy and the UK's transition to a net zero future.”
The public consultation, opened in March 2019, drew a total of 13 responses from production and exploration licensees and industry associations/trade bodies.
