STAVANGER, Norway — Equinor has started Phase 2 of the Peregrino development in the Campos Basin offshore Brazil.
On Monday, the new Peregrino C platform produced its first oil.
Phase 2 is designed to access a further 250 MMbbl of oil and extend the Peregrino Field life to 2040, lifting overall production from the field to 110,000 bbl/d at peak.
The new platform with drilling facilities and living quarters is connected to the Peregrino FPSO and a new pipeline importing gas to the platform for power generation.
Originally Equinor had targeted a late 2020 startup, but COVID-19 led to cuts in the workforce various times during the hookup phase. However, the project came onstream within its original $3 billion budget.
By switching from diesel to gas for power generation on Peregrino C, Phase 2 should avoid 100,000 metric tons per year of CO2 emissions from the field, and this should reduce opex costs and simplify logistics.
Digital innovations include a 3D model of the entire platform that operators can use on an iPad in the field, allowing for improved cooperation with the operational support team in Rio de Janeiro
Peregrino Phase 1 comprises an FPSO and the Peregrino A and B wellhead platforms. Since startup in 2011, the field has produced more than 210 MMbbl of oil. Equinor’s partner is Sinochem.
